Torbreck has an established heritage of producing expressive, generous red wines. Since 1994 they have remained committed to creating exceptional Rhône-style wines that reflect the very best vineyards in Australia's famous Barossa region. Provenance is everything, and they believe that the Barossa is the most exciting place to craft character wines. With a European sense of tradition, Torbreck pays tribute to the vineyards with minimal intervention, creating wines of richness, structure and length that age gracefully for those with patience and strong disposition.
The name ‘Struie’ originates from a mountain in the rugged highlands of north-east Scotland, which overlooks the Torbreck forest near Inverness. The view from the top down across the Dornoch Firth is as inspiring as that from the Barossa Ranges.
The fruit for this Torbreck Shiraz cuvée is from a single vineyard in the Eden Valley and from select old vines in the Barossa Valley’s Western Ranges, with an average vine age of 50 years. This wine expresses the rich spirit of Shiraz sourced from a mix of old bush vines from both valleys with 57% from the Barossa and 43% Eden Valley. The fruit was fermented in a combination of open top cement and wooden vats along with stainless steel tanks. The juice was then basket pressed and transferred into a mix of seasoned hogsheads and French oak barriques, with 20% being new oak, where it matured and developed for up to 18 months. After racking and tasting, the final cuvée was bottled without being fined or filtered.

An inky black red engulfs your glass with a deep purple edge. The aromas are no less densely packed with dark plums, black cherries, mix peppers, allspice, bitter cacao and cigar ash. These all carry confidently onto a full and engaging palate with homemade dark berry preserve, bitter chocolate and a graphite seam. This full bodied wine has a silky texture expressing a plushness of luscious dark berry fruits along with supportive savoury tannins that do not overwhelm. With the oak perfectly dovetailed resulting in a sophisticated and most opulent finish.

This 2021 Torbreck ‘The Struie’ Shiraz has 15% Alc./vol. Crafted in a classic dry style. Decant for 45-60 minutes and serve in a generously shaped bold red wine glass at 17°- 18°C. *NZ$92.00
