This story began in the late 1980’s when Georg Fromm and Hätsch Kalberer met and decided to create the FROMM Winery. The first vines were planted under the guidance of the Swiss founder Georg, and later in 1992, after the talking became planning and then planting, FROMM officially started with its very first harvest. I have known Fromm since the planting of these first vines, actually meeting up with Hätsch at the then simple winery / cellar door in 1994 to taste their first wines.
Today this passion for Marlborough wine, continues now under the careful eye of an old family friend and owner Pol Lenzinger, along with co-owner Stephan Walliser and Swiss business partner George Walliser. Georg has moved his focus back to his family winery in Malans, Switzerland.
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Churton Vineyard, Wrekin Vineyard and Fromm Vineyards. All three vineyards practice no herbicides, pesticides or systemic fungicides, though approved natural fertilisers are applied, and all vineyards certified organic. All of the fruit was hand-picked and on arrival into the winery partly destemmed and a wild yeast ferment initiated. There were mainly whole berries including approximately 25% whole bunches, with the result of having partial ‘carbonic maceration’ - *(fermentation starting inside the berry), that gives the wine a vibrant, floral lift. The wine was gently pressed and allowed to go through malolactic fermentation in old Burgundian oak barrels. The wine was not fined or filtered and made without any adjustments or additives except for a minimal amount of sulphur at bottling to ensure the wine’s stability.

On the elevated nose you have bright aromas of wild forest berries, lifted floral & herbs and a note of fresh pomegranate. The deliberate winemaking has given the palate and mouthfeel a vibrancy and energy to this Pinot Noir showcasing ripe cherries and those pomegranate flavours engaging your senses. Due to this wine not being fined or filtered there is a natural texture and edge to the wine highlighted by the lifted fruit acidity and Pinot Noir’s youthful nature. Serving slightly chilled is definitely recommended to appreciate its sprightly personality.
