The fruit for this luscious white wine is sourced from the Cecchi vineyards in Maremma, which is located in the south-west corner of the Tuscan region, on the coast near the town of Grossetto. The Cecchi family have always had great foresight and saw the potential in this area, and in 1996 they bought the Val delle Rose estate in Poggio la Mozza in the heart of the wine area known as Morellino di Scansano.
I have been involved with this project for 20 years, I was here when they broke ground to build the winery, stunning cellars and the reception-hosting areas. I was actually working at the Val delle Rose winery in 2023, tasting samples and checking new plantings. Originally the vineyards covered 25 hectares, and over the past 20 years the vineyard extensions are now at 100 hectares in the province of Grosseto. The winery is located approximately 500m above sea level, with stunning views. The different vineyard sites having unique aspects, slopes and influences from the sea breezes during the day and evening, bring balance to the fruit. After a low impact, respectful vinification and just 2-3 months of development in tank before tasting, the team have captured the dynamic and vibrant personality of Vermentino in this 2023 vintage.

In your glass you are greeted by a pale straw colour with a light peach glow. On the nose you have inviting aromas of honeysuckle, apples, peaches, pineapple skin and fragrant floral notes that are a signature of Vermentino from Maremma. The light-to-medium generous palate showcases those fleshy fruit characteristics which are kept alive with a thin seam of minerality and a balanced amount of natural fruit acidity, giving this wine an appealing personality and a vibrant, refreshing finish.

This 2023 Cecchi ‘La Mora’ Vermentino DOC has 13% Alc./vol. Classic Dry Style. Chill gently and serve in an aromatic shaped wine glass at 8º- 9ºC. - *NZ$29.00
