I have had the pleasure of working with Brookfields for over three decades. And over this time, Peter’s premium Bordeaux red blend has been an icon wine here in New Zealand and around the globe. Well-known and respected by those in the know, with wine enthusiasts the world-over paying due attention and enjoying this ‘Reserve Vintage’ expression.
This 2021 ‘Gold Label’ (as it is locally known) a Cabernet Sauvignon predominant cuvée, is the culmination of diligent attention across the different vineyards and respectful winemaking. This ‘Reserve’ label is only crafted in ideal years, and the 2021 is another outstanding addition to the dynasty. The three specific parcels were carefully harvested and fermented separately. With the fruit being tank fermented on skins for about 2 weeks with regular daily pump-overs. The primary juice was drained off and then the grapes gently pressed. Only the best pressing parcels are added back to the free-run juice. Then malolactic fermentation before being transferred into French oak barrels for approximately 12 months maturation. This 2021 ‘Reserve Vintage’ Cabernet / Merlot embraces the tradition established by this blend. Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone with Merlot adding to the fruit profile while the Cabernet Franc is the catalyst that enhances and unifies the mid palate.

★ The inviting nose reveals dark plums, blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, cacao, dried herbs, subtle spices and a deft vanilla oak note. The wines generosity and refined character stealthily engage your senses, expressing an adept agility, with the self-assured varietals stepping forward in unison for your consideration and appreciation. This wine is well supported by fine natural tannins and balanced oak giving the palate structure and an elegant texture. This 2021 Brookfields ‘Reserve Vintage’ Cabernet / Merlot has 14% Alc./vol. Classic dry style. Decant for 45-60 minutes and serve in a generously shaped wine glass at 17°- 18°C. • *NZ$70

With decanting, approachable now - though it would appreciate 12-18 months and will gracefully age for another 14-16 years.
