I have had the pleasure of working with Brookfields for three decades. And over this time, Peter’s premium Bordeaux red blend has been an icon wine here in New Zealand and around the globe. Well-known and respected by those in the know, with wine enthusiasts the world-over paying due attention and enjoying this ‘Reserve Vintage’ wine.
This 2019 ‘Gold Label’ (as it is locally known) Cabernet predominant blend, is the culmination of diligent attention and dedication across the different vineyards and then reverent winemaking. This ‘Reserve’ label wine are only made in ideal vintage years, and the 2019 is an exceptional addition to the labels dynasty.
The three varietals and specific vineyard parcels were carefully harvested and fermented separately. With the fruit being tank fermented on skins for about 2 weeks with regular daily pump-overs. The primary juice was drained off and then the grapes were gently pressed. Only the best pressing parcels were added back to the free run juice. Malolactic fermentation was then encouraged before being transferred into new French oak barrels for approximately 15 months maturation. It must be noted that this 2019 ‘Gold Label’ has an exciting percentage of Cabernet Franc in the cuvée.

As you pour you will be greeted by an intense dark red colour and shining hue. The developing nose reveals ripe small blackberries, blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, bitter cacao, dried herbs, star anise and deft vanilla oak note. The densely packed characters can not help but explode across your palate, showcasing rich flavours, but with a defined symmetry and agility, with the three confident varietals all stepping forward in unison for your consideration and approval which is easily given. Elegantly supported with exacting tannins and balanced oak giving the palate ample structure and a refined texture. This wine has a unique signature, though with a respectful recognition of its heritage, integrity, refinement and beguiling personality. This is a generous wine, ‘it will not go quietly into that good night’, it has an enduring character and incredible finish. A wine worth cellaring.

This 2019 Brookfields ‘Reserve Vintage’ Cabernet / Merlot has 14% Alc./vol. Classic dry style. Decant for 45-60 minutes and serve in a generously shaped wine glass at 17°- 18°C. *NZ$69.99

An iconic Hawke’s Bay Bordeaux cuvée expressing integrity and an enduring character.

CELLARING POTENTIAL: *(Review 27/8/22)
With good decanting, it can be approachable now - though it would appreciate another 18-24 months and will gracefully age for another 15 - 17 years.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
Perfect wine pairing with prime wagyu, aged scotch fillet, roast beef, slow cooked wild game meats with a wine-jus, rich pasta dishes, and earthy vegetarian cuisine, along with aged hard cheeses - enjoy.

Always drink responsibly.
