Maison Jean Loron - ‘respected traditions’• 20 July 2025

I recently had the pleasure to feature and taste these articulate wines at my ESSENCA Stemware presentation in Bavaria - Germany. I contacted a good friend Thierry Bellicaud, whom I have known for more years than we can both count. I was looking for a well balanced Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for a selection of wines I was featuring during my stemware presentation and tasting. And Thierry was quick to get in touch and suggest the following 2 wines.
Maison Jean Loron is one of the oldest and largest vineyard owners in the southern Burgundy, with its wine history dating back to 1711. Domaines Auvigue who crafted the Chardonnay boasts a rich history in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Since 2019, they have been located in the fully restored Romanesque church of Fuissé. A true cathedral of wine, this site is one of the most unique in Burgundy, located a stone's throw from the Roche de Solutré and home to the estate's winemaking and aging cellars.
Château de la Terrière who crafted the Pinot Noir, this estate has stood facing Mont Brouilly since the 14th century. After belonging to successive generations of nobles, Château de la Terrière was taken over in 2003 with extensive work being carried out in the cellar and vineyards. Please find below a few insights and short tasting notes on my first impressions when presenting these wines last month.

*(These wines are available in several international markets & online, and most importantly are ready to sip, savour & share, plus can also age).

Domaines Auvigue ‘Pouilly Fuissé’ Les Villages 2022
Grape Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Village of Fuissé, Burgundy - France
Winemaker: Céline Hirsch

The grapes sourced from several plots in the commune of Fuissé. The gently pressed juice was transferred into stainless steel tanks making up 30% and the remaining 70% into traditional French oak barrels (with 1/3 being new oak) for traditional vinification. This wine was then aged on fine lees for around 12 months before tasting, blending and then bottling.

On the elegant nose, you have fresh aromas of white flowers, along with mixed apples, green pear and some subtle almond notes. The palate is bright and engaging, celebrating those pip-fruits with an elegant mineral seam and good varietal acidity. The wine has an agile palate feel and a relaxed structure from those deftly infused almond, vanilla oak details and finishing with a classic clean dry dismount.

• Chill gently & serve 8°- 9°C • 13% Alc. • Classic Dry Style • Cellar 3 - 4 years • *Euro €39

Domaines Loron ‘Sélection de la Terrière’ Pinot Noir 2022
Grape Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir
Growing Region: Cogny & Ville-sur-Jarnioux, Burgundy - France
Winemakers: Stephen Botton & Théophane Gouraud

Traditional Burgundian style vinification with approximately 20 days of maceration on skins, developing colour, texture and varietal flavours. The wine was then aged on fine lees, partly in large oak vats (foudres) and partly in traditional barrels previously used 1 - 3 times. It was then aged for around 12 months before tasting, blending and bottling.

You have an inviting nose with alluring aromas of red cherries, raspberries and mixed wild berries along with a deft hint of dried flowers and summer herbs. The medium weight palate celebrates those ripe fleshy red fruits, along with cherries being the focus and nicely supported by good fruit acidity, nicely infused fine grained tannins and finishing with a vibrant dismount.

• Mild Decanting & serve between 16°- 17°C • 13% Alc. • Classic Dry Style • Cellar 5 - 7 years • *Euro €39
