For more than 20 years, I have worked with Andrea Cecchi and the passionate team at Cecchi in the heart of Tuscany. If you have never been to Tuscany of tried a Chianti Classico, there is no better introduction to both, than to open a bottle of their 'Riserva di Famiglia' (Family Reserve). One of Cecchi’s most terroir expressive wines, showcasing all that is special about Sangiovese and Tuscany. Plus this 2018 vintage is the 125th anniversary of the founding of Cecchi in 1893.
The 'Riserva di Famiglia' reflects the Cecchi family’s deep connection and incredible knowledge of this historic Chianti Classico region. This wine is a special cuvee produced in only the best years from fruit grown in Castellina in Chianti. The Cecchi family have amassed an incredible wealth of winemaking expertise. Their wines crafted with a passion, have made the Cecchi family one of the iconic symbols of Chianti Classico. The ‘Riserva di Famiglia’ is only produced from sites deemed to meet their high standards, and regular barrel sampling to select the best components for the final blend.
As each parcel of fruit arrived to the winery, the berries underwent a combination of traditional and modern vinification. Left on skins for a managed period at controlled temperatures, capturing primary varietal characters. Fermentation was around 26°- 28°C and maceration took place over 2 weeks, until it was time to be transferred into oak, where is developed for 12 months in a mix of oak barriques. Then after blending and bottling it was rested for a minimum 3 months before being released.
★ On the nose you are invited by dark cherries, plums, dried spices, violets and a deft tobacco note. The medium weight palate is engaging and approachable, showcasing a vibrant celebration of those dark cherries, along with mocha-chocolate, dried herbs, spices and well-integrated use of oak. The wine is nicely balanced with good fruit tannins and honest varietal acidity giving a dynamic energy. Time in oak has resulted in a fine grained texture, with a subtle smoky ember undertone giving a little mystery and added character to the classic dry finish.
This 2018 Cecchi ‘Riserva di Famiglia’ Chianti Classico DOCG has 13.5% Alc./vol. Classic dry style. Decant for 30-45 minutes and serve in a medium-full shaped wine glass at 16°- 18°C. *NZ$48.99
