Winemaker Glenn Thomas and his partner Sharon were leasing the Turnball’s farm cottage and after a few bottles of wine crafted by Glenn it was easy to appreciate these elevated river terraces were ideal for growing premium quality grapes, so in 2002 Tūpari vineyard was planted.
The fruit is sourced from their own vines planted in the Awatere valley, which is a special parcel of land sitting slight elevated and consists of free draining gravels resting on fine sand, silt and clay. The fruit was picked at the ideal time and once it arrived at the winery the fruit was gently pressed and fermented under the diligent eye of Glenn. Using a specific yeast to highlight the nuances in the unique flavours achieved along with retaining a few grams of natural residual sugar. The wine was then allowed to develop for a period giving character and just the right amount of mineral focus to this articulate expression.
★ On the upbeat aroma you have fresh limes, lemons, green apple skins and a hint of lemon-grass. The palate is dynamic and energised, celebrating those vibrant citrus fruits, intwined with a subtle seam of minerality giving added mystery and allure. This is a well-balanced classic style Riesling, with good varietal acidity resulting in a memorable and refreshing dismount.
This 2019 TŪPARI Dry Riesling has 11.4% Alc./vol. Made in an off-dry style with 5.2g/L R.S.
