They purchased 34.5 hectares of these pioneering vineyards in Central Otago. Most of the vines purchased are on Cairnmuir Road, with a reputation as the holy grail of Bannockburn. Nestled in the foothills of the mountains and amongst breathtaking scenery, the sites offer ideal conditions which are suited to producing quality Pinot Noir grapes.
Sustainable viticulture is high on Edmond de Rothschild’s priority list. Ensuring they have the lowest possible impact on the environment and preserve the unique nature that is Central Otago. And to ensure they leave it intact for future generations, while simultaneously producing exceptional wines. While respecting local knowledge, Edmond de Rothschild is aiming to combine its own know-how, with these vineyards and the unique wines of Central Otago.
The hand-picked fruit was gently pressed and then a long cool fermentation followed, that was stopped to retain a very small amount of fruit sugars to balance the fruit weight and natural acidity. Also, a small amount of Pinot Noir fermented on skins was added at the end of fermentation to add a thin layer of complexity to the palate. The Rosé was briefly aged in tank for 5 months before bottling, labeled and released onto the market.
★ This 2023 Akarua Rosé has a classic coral salmon pink colour with shining hue. The hypnotic aromas tempt you with strawberry-sherbet and pink Turkish delight notes, along with pink-grapefruit, cherry blossom and a splash of citrus. On the light, delicately textured palate this wine calmly reveals early morning strawberries, pink grapefruit, gala apples, mandarin and peach skin and a thin mineral seam nicely highlighted by natural fruit acidity, lifting the palate and personality. This wine has thin layers all nicely defined, crafting a well-balanced crisp, refreshing rosé that will bring a smile to your tastebuds.
This 2023 Akarua ‘Central Otago’ Pinot Rosé has 13% Alc./vol. A classic dry style.
